Outdoor Lighting Transformer
Some people still hesitate using the outdoor lighting transformer, one of the greatest inventions of our time. It is hard to say exactly what the problem is, so following are some words to remember and perhaps between all of us, we can put any concerns to rest.
The main purpose is to reduce or step down the 120-volt current to 12 volts. For the lights to work properly, the person putting in the system must determine how much wattage is required for the bulbs, with an extra amount added in just in case.
The cable is usually buried anywhere from 3 inches to 6 inches deep. Those in rocky or clay dirt areas can cover the cables with decorative rock. Designed to be weatherproof, covering the cables is more for safety, to avoid tripping or curious animals biting at them.
Lighting systems that use 110 volts, such as patio lights with a standard cord, plug in to an outlet. Low voltage lights, however, require a reduction to 12 volts, the same voltage that runs most vehicles.
The low voltage landscape lighting transformer is relatively small. There are different colors available, including silver, black and off-white.
Some have timers and even others have both a timer and a photocell. The benefit is that dark storm clouds can bring a need for outdoor lighting and the sensor will override the timer.
Only plug your outdoor lighting transformer in to your outdoor GFCI-protected power receptacle. GFCI is an acronym used in the United States, and stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. In Europe, the acronym is RCBO, or Residual Current Breaker with Overload.
What that special outlet does is provide a safety mechanism that detects an electrical current imbalance and trips the circuit. They greatly minimize the chance of shock to adults, animals and children.
